“Exquisite Poison: Cocktails Inspired by Fiction” is Now Available

Phantom House Press teamed up with the mixologists at Fabled Spirits to bring 30 cocktails inspired by the stories in the original “Exquisite Poison” anthology, including my very own “Longing for Shadows.”

Read the blurb for “Viper in the Garden,” the cocktail inspired by my story, below.

“Dance with me,” Eurydice said. She was resplendent—brown-skinned and dark-haired, wearing a crown of crimson poppies atop her wedding veil. The night was warm. So much dancing had left a thin sheen of sweat on her skin. He kissed her, inhaling the scent of rosewater and marjoram and wine.

“If I dance with you,” Orpheus said, “there will be no music.”

“Let someone else play a while,” she argued, but Orpheus just shook his head. In truth, he was too tired and too full to dance. Later, he would wonder, Would she still be alive if he’d danced with her? Or, at the very least, would he have died with her?

Through Sajwaj’s beautiful prose, one can almost taste the rosewater, marjoram, and wine clinging to Eurydice as she lay lifeless in the garden, the salty zip of sweat on her brow, and the sharp tang of venom in the air. We took each and every essence of Eurydice’s tragic death and distilled them into a lethal libation.
